Description
The AN/PVS-30 Universal Night Sight Long-Range (UNS LR) is a clip-on weapon sight that brings high-performance Gen 3 image intensification to most rifle and day scopes. Type classified as AN/PVS-30, this clip-on is designed for frontline long-range rifles and is currently in production for the U.S. Army for use with Knight’s Armament Company Semi-Automatic Sniper System (SASS) and other long-range sniper platforms. Its patented boresight alignment technology preserves the accuracy of your range-tested day scope, allowing operators to retain their proven ballistic zero when switching to night operations.
Physically, the unit measures 9.58 inches (243 mm) long, 3.5 inches (89 mm) high, with an optical centerline approximately 1.5 inches (38 mm) above the mounting surface, and it weighs 2.9 lb (1.32 kg). The finish is available in flat black matte or desert sand brown, and the housing is corrosion resistant. Controls are simple and field-friendly: an on/off/gain control knob and a manual focus ring. Power is provided by a single standard AA battery or one DL123, with typical battery life exceeding 24 hours on AA and exceeding 36 hours on DL123 cells. The sight uses a KAC quick-attach/detach mount compatible with MIL-STD-1913 rails or equivalent mounting surfaces. Field of view is approximately 9 degrees with image intensification (and 6 degrees when used with thermal attachments), and the unit is rated waterproof to 3 feet for 4 hours. It operates across a wide temperature range from −40 °C (−40 °F) to 50 °C (122 °F).
Optically the AN/PVS-30 is a clip-on weapon sight built around a 120 mm refractive telephoto lens and provides unity (1×) magnification. It focuses from 20 meters to infinity and uses ANVIS-style 18 mm image-intensified tubes; export restrictions (FOM) may apply to certain tube configurations. The sight’s patented boresight alignment (US Patent 7,142,357) has been proven in thousands of delivered sniper sights and allows factory bore-sighting to within 0.5 MOA of the day-scope point of impact.
In performance testing the AN/PVS-30 demonstrates exceptional long-range recognition: under starlight it will recognize a standing man beyond 800 meters and a vehicle beyond 1,000 meters; under a one-quarter moon it will recognize a standing man beyond 1,000 meters and a vehicle beyond 1,500 meters. Boresight retention has been measured at 0.5 MOA after a 300-round firing schedule with .300 Winchester Magnum. The sight has been weapons-certified for use on platforms up to and including .50 caliber rifles. When installed it does not change cheek weld, eye relief, or bullet impact relative to the day-scope zero, preserving the shooter’s established ergonomics and ballistics
